Walk to Cure Cancer Frequently Asked Questions
Can I submit donations prior to the event? Absolutely, we highly encourage fundraisers to submit contributions prior to Walk day. As the event continues to grow, so do registration lines. Donations may be mailed to: Walk to Cure Cancer 333 South Street, RM: 13E-495 Shrewsbury, MA 01545
Can I drop off donations in person, prior to Walk Day? Yes, please call (508) 856-2589 to schedule a date and time to drop off donations. This is also a great way for us to meet our fundraisers!
Is there a registration fee or fundraising minimum? No. Every dollar raised brings us closer to our goal, enabling research, state of the art equipment, and the ability to staff talented medical professionals.
Approximately how many people walked in the 2009 Walk to Cure Cancer? Approximately 13,000 people walked in the 2009 event.
When and Where is the 12th Annual Walk to Cure Cancer? The 12th Annual Walk to Cure Cancer will be held on Sunday, September 26, 2010 at UMass Medical School, 55 Lake Avenue North, Worcester, MA 01655.
Where does the money I collect go? The Walk to Cure Cancer supports all types of cancer research at the UMass Memorial Cancer Center of Excellence.
How long is the route? The main route around Lake Quinsigamond is approximately five miles. A one-mile alternate route is also available.
How many water stops are on the route? Four water stops are located on the course.
Where are the restrooms? Port-o-johns are available on campus and at two of the water stops on the route.
What about parking? Parking is free and available on and around the UMass Medical School campus. You will be directed where to park upon arrival. There is one garage and two lots on the UMass campus. Once these lots are full, you will be directed to park in the Biotech lots on Plantation Street. Parking is also available at the park off North Lake Avenue. We do suggest that your team carpool to ensure that everyone has a space.
What about food? After walkers return from the course, they may pick up light snacks at the Food Tent. No refreshments will be provided other than the water along the route.
Where do I register? The Registration Tent is the largest tent on site. Walkers may register and turn in money at the Registration Tent. Please try to total the money you have raised and clearly list each contributors name and address.
Can I continue to raise funds or turn in money after the Walk? Absolutely! What if I am unable to finish the Walk? If you are unable to complete the Walk, you may stop at any water station and ask a volunteer to radio for assistance. If you are not near a water station, there will be police officers on the route and EMT’s on bike available to help. A comfort van will also circulate around the course to pick up any walkers who need a ride.
Can I or my children bring a bike, scooter or skateboard? No. We anticipate that over 13,000 walkers will be on the route. Bicycles, scooters and skateboards create a dangerous situation and insurance liability.
Are pets allowed? No. We anticipate that over 13,000 people will be present for the Walk. This creates an increased risk of harm for both pets and participants.
Can we bring banners to the event? We encourage you to bring banners and signs, but they must be items you can pick up and carry with you. You cannot post banners or signs on buildings or any property on or off the UMass Medical School campus.
Can we bring flyers of other events or election posters to hand out at the Walk? No. There is no soliciting of any kind on the University of Massachusetts Medical School School property. There will be no pamphleting for events, political candidates, etc. The objective of the day is to celebrate cancer survivors and to remember those who have lost their battle with the disease. We are walking to raise funds for cancer research and put an end to cancer.
Can I bring balloons to the event? In an effort to be environmentally friendly, we ask that you do not bring balloons to the Walk.
Can I fundraise online? Yes. Create an online fundraising page at www.firstgiving.com/wtcc. Creating a FirstGiving page takes only a few minutes and makes the fundraising process simple. Contact friends and family members all over the world, share your story, upload a photograph or create a widget for your Facebook or MySpace page.
